1371943 Seaming non-metallic sheet material CUFFLIN HOLDINGS Ltd 16 Feb 1973 [17 Feb 1972] 7474/72 Heading B5K Two sheets 1, 2 of natural or synthetic rubber or plastics material are lap-jointed by applying adhesive 3 to one or both of the faces to be joined, placing one face over the other face to form a seam, and rolling a vibratory compacting roller over the seam. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, two polychloroprene sheets 1, 2 provided with internal braided reinforcement 8 are laid side-by-side with the sheet 1 overlapping the sheet 2. The sheet I is rolled back and both faces to be joined are brushed by a power wire brush, cleaned and coated with an impact adhesive 3 which is allowed to dry. A second coat of impact adhesive is applied and the sheet 1 rolled forward. The seam is pressed down manually and, if alignment is satisfactory, a vibratory compacting roller is rolled thereover. Preferably, both sides of the joint are covered with neoprene strips (4), (6), Fig. 2 (not shown), which are applied separately by wire brushing, cleaning, coating with two coats of impact adhesive, hand rolled into place and compacted by a vibratory roller. To avoid the formation of a step, before applying the strip (4) or (6), an uncured neoprene mastic filler may be forced into the edge of the joint to form a smooth transition. In a modification, Fig. 3, the edge of the joint is covered by a moulded strip 10 formed with a step 12 and feathered edges. The joint may be used in the manufacture of inflatable tubular formers for casting voids in concrete.
|
