Aldehydes are fixed on cellulose (viscose rayon or cotton), cellulose esters and starch by treating the polymer with an aqueous mixture containing an aldehyde (HCHO) and a carbamate R1R3 NCOOR2 in which R1, R2 and R3 = H (not R2), alkyl or carbocyclic aryl radicals, there being at least 2.5 (3-60) moles of aldehyde per mole of carbamate. The process fixes aldehydes on the polymers efficiently and controllably, and is used to impart wash-water, crease-proof and H2O resistant properties to cotton and viscose fabrics. Processes (1) carried out at 180-300 deg.F, (2) in which the treating mixture contains 0.1-5% of a lower alkyl (Et) carbamate, and (3) in which 0.5-2.5% (wt.) of HCHO is fixed on cellulose.
|
