1382572 Reserve cell YARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORP 7 Nov 1973 [20 Feb 1973] 51678/73 Heading HIB A cell comprises an insulating casing 12 closed at one end by a metallic contact cover 22 and at the other end by a removable insulating cap 16 carrying a contact 18. The inner cylindrical electrode 32 is porous and may be the anode and comprise Zn, Cd, Mg or Al. The space 26 within the electrode 32 is filled with bibulous material 28 supporting dry electrolyte 30 in particulate form. Examples of material 28 are fibrous cellulosic material such as cotton or paper wadding, asbestos, fibreglass, or porous plastics foam. Examples of electrolyte 30 are NaCl, KCl or NH4Cl. Cylindrical cathode 36 which may be silver oxide, silver chloride or manganese dioxide is spaced by a separator 34 from the electrode 32. To activate the cell the cap 16 is removed and water is added to the electrolyte 30, the solution passing through the porous electrode 32 and separator 34 to the electrode 36. The electrodes 32, 36 may be renewed by removing cap 16 and sliding them out of casing 12. In another embodiment (not shown) the electrode 36 is air depolarized and the casing 12 is air permeable. |
