The invention concerns novel 4-oxo-4H-benzo[4,5]cycloheptal[1,2-b]thiophene derivatives of the formula WHEREIN R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, R2 IS HYDROGEN, FLUORINE, CHLORINE, BROMINE, LOWER ALKYL OR LOWER ALKOXY, R3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, and A is ethylene or vinylene, useful as ANTIPHLOGISTIC AGENTS.
