An endless flexible belt (3) has internally facing buckets (5) fixed centrally on the belt face between side walls (4) which are pleated to allow the walls to remain vertical to the belt face as the belt is flexed around pulleys. The belt face extends beyond the side walls to form a loading for internal corner pulleys (2). The elevator is loaded through chute (14) where the belt runs on support rollers (13). When travelling vertically the belt is guided by rollers (12) so that the side walls (4) are sealed against back plate (10). The elevator is discharged by inverting belt and buckets over chute (15) between upper corner pulleys (2) driven from motor (7) by chains (8).
