Stitching together panels of e.g. sails - by covering the pref. zig-zag stitching with a protective band

Two fabric panels are secured together by a line of stitching (pref. zig-zag) and the stitching which projects from the surface of the panels is covered by a protective band of matl. The method is used for protecting the stiching of boat sails. Where synthetic yarns are used for stiching pref. cotton sails, the protective band prevents derioration due to ultra-violet light, abrasion, and salt crystals formed when the sail is soaked with sea water and dried.
