Acidic contaminants are removed from water-immiscible organic liquids by contacting with solid, homogeneous combination of 5-95 (pref. 15-85) pbw of NaOH and 95-5 (pref. 85-15) pbw of Ca(OH)2 and/or CaO. A water-miscible alcohol is pref. added to the organic liquid in an amt. of 0.5-5 vol.% to inhibit the build up of salts on the alkali surface. The liquid is pref. passed upwards through a vertical, cylindrical bed of the alkali supported on a liquid-permeable support over a sump contg. aqs. alkali. The process is esp. useful for removing traces of acid catalyst from the products of alkylating aromatics with olefins, organic acid by-products from the oxidative prodn. of alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, and H2S and mercaptans formed in the cracking of crude oils. The alkali combination has high porosity and mechanical strength.
|
