1389920 Filters and the cleaning thereof A SCHUTZ 24 May 1972 24434/72 Heading B1D Slurry, e.g. slurry juice in sugar manufacture, is filtered by pumping it from container 20 through pipe 24 into casing 12 which is maintained full of slurry so that it is filtered through perforated discs 13, which are covered with filter cloth, into hollow rotatable spindle 15, the filtrate being withdrawn through pipes 28 and 29; but when cleaning of the filter discs is necessary, the valves are adjusted so that gas, such as compressed air, can be forced from pipe 31 into spindle 15, preferably in several short pulses, and flows through the discs in the reverse direction to the filtrate, while the spindle and discs are rotated by motor 18. During this cleaning operation, slurry flows out of casing 12 through valve 6 into container 20 until the liquid-level in the casing reaches the centre of the discs. The released sludge settles in trough 16. When more thorough cleaning is required, the casing is emptied and the discs are sprayed with water or dilute hydrochloric acid.
|
