<p>1360909 Styrene copolymer/surfactant compositions S C JOHNSON & SON Inc 7 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 5678/72 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C4-C5] A fabric treating composition comprises (1) an aqueous solution of at least one surfactant which is an anionic or nonionic detergent; and a copolymer of 50-65 wt. per cent of styrene and 33-43 wt. per cent of a monoethylenic monocarboxylic acid, and optionally up to 13 wt. per cent of another monomer. Acids specified are acrylic, methacrylic and ethacrylic, and additional monomers are C 1 -C 4 alkyl acrylates, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile. A preferred copolymer comprises 55-60 wt. per cent styrene, 35-40 wt. per cent methacrylic acid and 5-10 wt. per cent of isobutylacrylate, and has a mol. wt. of 5000 to 50,000. A long list of well known non-ionic and anionic surfactants is given; those preferred are sodium lauryl sulphate, and a mixture thereof with sodium N-lauroyl sarcosinate. In Examples I and II, copolymers of styrene (60%) and methacrylic acid (40%), and styrene (55%) methacrylic acid (35%) and isobutyl acrylate (10%) are prepared. These are then each used in a composition comprising the copolymer and sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium N-lauroyl sarcosinate, formaldehyde water and ammonia. A further composition comprises a styrene/isobutyl acrylate-methacrylic acid (55% : 10% : 35%) copolymer, the components specified above and in addition cetyl alcohol and disodium phosphate. This composition is converted to a foam aerosol in a can, using isobutane/propane as the propellant.</p> |
