<p>The apparatus consists of a brake body and a device to measure the braking force. Existing systems are based on working on a theoretical value of braking force, but the eddy current brake may be adapted to work in conjunction with a pneumatic brake. The two brakes are dependent upon each other and the total braking force is controlled. A generator is connected to a system of controls, and is connected to the eddy current brake at a certain speed. Some of the measuring devices are sensitive inductances and others are capacitances and piezo-electric transducers. The control system consists of a sophisticated electronic computer. At low speed, the apparatus achieves gradual transition between eddy current braking and pneumatic braking using ordinary brake blocks.</p> |
