The cylinder head (1) houses a poppet valve (6) and a valve seat (7) which are co-axial with the cylinder (2) and piston (3). The rotary valve (15) oscillates on the sleeve of the member (8). The lower portion of the rotary valve (15) has a curved contour (17) so that the cylinder (2) communicates in turn with the inlet ( 18) or the exhaust (19) when the rotary valve (15) is oscillated by the toothed rack (26) engaging the pinion (27). The rack (26) is driven by the lever (30) which forms part of the rocker arm (9) which also operates the poppet valve ( 6). This mechanism provides a longer period with the inlet and exhaust fully open when compared with conventional valves, improving efficiency and reducing exhaust pollution.
