1386614 2-Styryl-benzofurons HOECHST AG 7 Feb 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 5670/72 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds (I) in which A represents a mono-nuclear or polynuclear aromatic ring system which may be substituted by one or more non-chromophoric radicals and is fused to the b-side of the furan ring, R represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group that is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more non-chromophoric radicals, a phenyl group that is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more non-chromophoric radicals, or a free or functionally modified carboxyl group, and B represents an aromatic, carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring system which may be substituted by one or more non-chromophoric radicals, and their preparation by (a) reacting a compound of the general Formula (3) with a compound of the general formula BCHO or (b) reacting a compound of the general Formula (5) with a compound of the general Formula (6) in which R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>7</SP>, which may be the same or different, each represents an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group joined to the phosphorus atom either directly or via an oxygen atom. The compounds of the invention are optical brighteners and may be used to brighten textiles or may be incorporated into polymeric materials, e.g. polyamides and polyesters. |
