<p>Vessel divided into upper and lower compartments by a flexible, inelastic membrane, viz reinforced rubber, with a wide bore overhead inlet for accepting a viscous material by gravity feed via a valve. The lower chamber may be pressurised pneumatically or hydraulically to force material in the upper compartment out through a valved discharge pipe. The lower chamber can be drained to allow more feedstock to enter the upper chamber. The output is proportional to the fluid pumped into the lower chamber: no forces are generated by the membrane itself. Esp. for dispensing materials of viscosity >=500 poise, e.g. filled resins, adhesives, explosives, e.g. for transfer moulding cylindrical blocks of 'propergol'. Suitable for moving highly combustible materials without risk of local spark ignition, cf piston pumps with metallic pistons chambers.</p> |
