Belt 2 is wound round pulleys 3 mounted on shaft 4 and is immersed in electrolyte 7. Insulating rims 6 prevent access of electrolyte to the inside of the belt. Mercury bath 10 is confined by flexible insulating beads 11. P.T.F.E. studs 12 may be provided between bar 9 and belt 2 to prevent metallic contact. The belt 2 may be stainless steel. The bar 9 may be copper plated with a metal that does not amalgamate with mercury e.g. nickel.
