1408348 Indexing WARNER & SWASEY CO 12 Dec 1973 [24 Jan 1973] 57634/73 Heading B3B A machine tool comprises a tool turret 12 mounted for indexing rotation by means of a turret bar 32 and movable axially between a retracted position and an extended position, and wherein the indexing means includes a fluid pressure operated coupling means 24 operable between engaged and disengaged positions said coupling means 24 comprising a first coupling member 48 having a first annular array of teeth, a housing 54 fixedly connected with the first coupling member 48 to define a main chamber 76, a second coupling member 62 fixedly connected to the turret bar 32 within said main chamber 76 and having a second annular array of teeth, and control means for providing pressure fluid selectively to either side of the second coupling member 62 in the main chamber 76 to either interengage the first and second annular arrays of teeth, or to separate them when turret indexing is required. A cam and switch sensing device 114 detects the mode of the coupling means. In an indexing operation the turret 12 is moved to its extended position by a screw and ball nut drive 106, 108, 110 Which acts through a drive plate 52 attached direct to the coupling means first coupling member 48. In the extended position a gear 160 on the turret bar 32 engages an indexing drive gear 162 mounted in the turret housing 38 and driven by a motor 164. The coupling means 24 is then disengaged to allow indexing of the turret. The whole turret housing 38 and its contents are movable laterally on slide ways 40 by a lead screw drive 36. |
