<p>Coil annealing furnace of the generally known type having a base plate for supporting the sheet metal coils normally stacked one on top of the other with, if desired, convection plates or separators between each superimposed pair, and having at least one cover surrounding the coils and resting on the baseplate via joints preventing the entry of gases so that e.g. a reducing or neutral atmos. can be maintained in at least the interior of the covers, has a joint consisting of a ring of resilient material arranged between the base plate and the cover or the inner cover, and extends between two surfaces forming the respective walls of chambers cooled by a fluid passing round the peripheries of the cover and base respectively.
