Combined accelerator and brake pedal - with two part pedal with contoured end pivoted in two orthogonal directions

The combined accelerator and brake pedal is pivoted on the floor of the vehicle about a first axis so that the brakes are applied when the pedal is depressed. The edal shaft is made in two sections and partway up the shaft it is hinged about a second axis at 90 deg. to the first. Pushing the pedal sideways about the second axis operates the throttle linkage via a cable drive. The pedal is profiled so that the driver's foot grips it for the lateral movement. The fixed part of the pedal support is fitted with a cam which engages a peg on the side of the pedal shaft to push the pedal into the neutral setting when the brakes are applied.
