Iron protoporphyrin derivs. separation from globin - by selective precipitation in the presence of organic solvents

In a process for sepg. iron protoporphyrin and its derivs. or decompsn. and cleavage prods. (the so-called iron components) from globin in a liq. contg. blood substances, the liq. is cooled, pref. to 0 to -20 degrees C, and adjusted to pH 4.5 (pref. 2.5-4.5), an org. solvent having dehydrating props. (e.g. ethanol or its mixts. with glycol or glycerol) is added in an amt. of is not 40 vol% (pref. is not 70 vol%) (based on the total amt. of liq.) while maintainin cooling, and the precipitated iron components are sepd. off from the liq., pref. by addn. of salts such as KCl or sodium citrate, the globin being subsequently precipitated from the liq. Although the sepn. of iron components and globin is readily performable on a laboratory scale, the methods used are not suitable for large scale operation. The new process is simple and economical and can be used on large scale, permitting the sepn. of globin in amts. suitable for use in feedstuffs or foods.
