<p>A continuous drying centrifuge, used for filtering out sugar crystals from massecuite, has a nozzle for spraying crystals collected on the centrifuge screen with a clarifying liq. Means are provided to increase the thickness of the layer of crystals in the sprayed area and the clarifying liq. is sprayed on to the crystals by a gas stream which discharges the liq. as tiny droplets having a speed component in line with the tangent at the point of impact which is practically the same as the speed of crystals at that point, while the speed component normal to that point is negligible. The liq. can be introduced as a fine spray into the gas stream or can be aspirated into gas being passed through a venturi; the gas is pref. steam. Thickening the crystal layer is pref. effected by fitting a crystal discharge restrictor ring to the top of the basket and/or part-way up the basket. Device is for clarifying crystals of sugar before discharging them from a conical centrifuge basket. The thickened crystal layer and reduced shock of applicn. of washing spray avoid erosion of the layer and improve the clarifying process.</p> |
