N-Phosphonomethyl-glycine (I) and its salts are produced by reacting glycine with chloromethylphosphoric acid (II) or a salt thereof in is not 35% caustic alkali (pref. NaOH) at elevated temp. (pref. 90-105 degrees C), the pH of the reaction mixture being held at >10 by addition of solid alkali hydroxide if necessary, after completion of the reaction separating off the resulting alkali chloride, acidifying the filtrate isolating the resulting (I), and converting (I) into a salt if desired. (I) and its disodium salt are known plant growth regulators and herbicides. Using >35% caustic alkali and maintaining pH >10 by adding solid alkali hydroxide simplifies purification procedures and shortens reaction times without adversely affecting yields.
|
