The continuous process for analysing a gas containing a tracer involves successively introducing a number of calibrated samples of gas with a different number of chromatographic columns and the temporal separation between the introduction of any two samples is made equal to or greater than the temporal width of a chromatographic peak for the tracer. The tracer may consist of sulphur hexafluoride, and its concentration may be measured by an electon-capture detector. When the last chromatographic column of the series is reached, the series of introductions of gas samples is repeated, starting with the first of the columns, so that continuous monitoring is achieved. There may be several "waves" of the tracer going up each column.
