This industrial dishwasher which is used particularly in the petrochemical industry incorporates inlet(s) and outlet(s) for inert gas mounted away from the inside of the wash chamber towards the outer pipe so that inert gas can be supplied from outside to the machine and then out into a suitable exhaust system. The inert gas displaces the air where the products are being cleaned so that any gas mixture which may arise cannot explode. The inert gas stream is monitored by an automatic control mechanism which gives an alarm signal if any inert gas escapes. In the case of heavily soiled components, inert gas can be supplied constantly to dilute the large amount of explosive gases which might evaporate.
