The scanning element utilizes light beams for the scanning of signal markings on the path and consists of at least one flexible light guide cable (13) which comprises a number of known optical glass or plastic fibres. At the reflection one part of the fibres conducts the light and the other part returns the light. The light guide cable (13) forms a scanning surface (14) adjusted to a signal point (12) with its front end located in the area of the path (10). The other end is located outwith the area of the path and connected to a light transmitter and receiver (15).
