ketones of formula (I): (where R is 1-3C alkyl, or phenyl opt. mono-substd. by halo, CF3, 1-3C alkyl or 1-3C alkoxy; and acid-addition salts are prepd. by catalytic hydrogenation of corresp. 3-nitro-4-aminophenyl ketone at 1-150 atmos., pref. 5-50 atmos. at 50-150 degrees C, (pref. 80-150 degrees C), in presence of organic solvents and a platinum gp. metal deposited on alumina and activated with an inorganic base esp. KOH and NaOH; opt. converting the prod. into an acid-addition salt, opt. after isolation of the base from the reaction mixture, or opt. liberating the base from the acid-addition salt and opt. forming another acid-addition salt. Selective reduction of the NO2 group without attacking the carbonyl group gives good yields of (I). |
