3-Methylthiopropyl isocyanide (I), of formula Me-S-(CH2)3-NC, is a new cpd. (I) can be converted into methionine by reacting with an alkyl carbonate and NaNH2 followed by hydrolysis. (I) can be prepd. by treating N-(3-methylthiopropyl)formamide (II) with a dehydrating agent (e.g. COCl2, tosyl chloride, PCl3, POCl3, P2O5, cyanuric chloride or SOCl2) in the presence of a base (e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or alkoxide or a tert. amine, esp. NEt3) in an inert solvent (esp. CH2Cl2 or 1,2-dichlorobenzene). The starting material (II) can be prepd. by formylation of 3-methylthiopropylamine.
