1310322 Phthalide derivatives HODOGAYA CHEMICAL CO Ltd and FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 14 May 1971 [15 May 1970 17 June 1970] 15067/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division D2] Novel phthalide derivatives having the formula wherein either (i) X 1 to X 4 are hydrogen atoms; R 1 and R 3 are hydrogen atoms, methyl or ethyl groups; R 2 is an optionally methyl substituted phenyl group and R 4 is a methyl or ethyl group; (ii) X 1 and X 4 are hydrogen atoms; one of X 2 and X 3 is a hydrogen atom and the other is a dimethylamino group; R 1 and R 3 are hydrogen atoms, methyl or ethyl groups; R 2 is an optionally methyl or ethoxy substituted phenyl group and R 4 is a methyl, ethyl or phenyl group, or (iii) X 1 to X 4 are chlorine atoms; R 1 and R 3 are hydrogen atoms, methyl or ethyl groups; R 2 is a methyl or ethyl group or an optionally methyl or ethoxy substituted phenyl group, and R 4 is a methyl, ethyl or phenyl group, are prepared by reacting a corresponding benzophenone-carboxylic acid and indole or a corresponding benzoyl indole and an aromatic amine for 10 to 20 minutes at a temperature of from 50‹ to 140‹ C. in the presence of a condensing agent such as acetic anhydride or phosphorus oxychloride, using if necessary, a volatile organic inert solvent. The novel compounds may be used as colour formers for pressure-sensitive copying paper (see Division D2).
