1448845 Filter device; ion exchange DYNEK CORP 28 Aug 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 08540/ 76 Headings B1D and B1J [Also in Division C1] A filter device for use in domestic water purification apparatus comprises a unitary housing 64 having an inlet 42 for receiving water under pressure, a distributor filter means 68 mounted within the housing in juxtaposition to the inlet for removing coarse solid particulate matter from the water, a particulate filter material 72 mounted above the distributor filter means for removing organic contaminants and odour producing constituents from the water, an upper filter means 70 mounted above the particulate filter means and having apertures of a smaller size than the filter means 68, and an outlet nozzle 16 formed integrally with the housing adjacent the upper filter means and extending laterally therefrom for removal of filtered water in a direction in counterflow to water through the housing. The filter device may be mounted in a domestic water purification apparatus such as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 (not shown) as described and claimed in Specification 1448844. The filter means 68 and 70 may be in the form of porous polyethylene discs, filter 68 having pores of about 35 microns diameter and filter 70 pores of about 10 microns diameter. The particulate filter material may be activated charcoal which may be coated with bacteria-preventing means, e.g. metallic silver or a silver salt, or it may be one or more ion exchange resins or a mixture of silvercoated activated charcoal and ion-exchange resin. If the particulate filter material comprises ion exchange resins, then a dye indicator may be provided to show when the resins are depleted, the housing being transparent for this purpose. Suitably, the thickness and porosity of filter 68 are chosen such that that filter becomes clogged with separated particulate matter at the same time as the particulate filter material becomes depleted. The combination of the filter device with a non-positive displacement pump will ensure cessation of water flow when this happens. |
