1448168 Alkylating aromatic hydrocarbons MONSANTO CO 25 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973] 41642/74 Heading C5E A process for the production of an alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon comprises simultaneously introducing an aromatic hydrocarbon having at least one replaceable hydrogen atom on an aromatic ring, an olefin and a Friedel Craft catalyst, e.g. AlCl 3 into a first reaction zone maintained at a temperature from 140‹ to 200‹C. or above and a pressure sufficient to maintain the reactants substantially in the liquid phase wherein the residence time is at least 15 minutes, the amount of Friedel Craft catalyst being in the range from 0À0010 to 0À0025 mole per mole of olefin, the olefin being added at a rate from 300 to 1500 moles per hour per mole of accumulated Friedel Craft catalyst, and the ratio of alkyl groups to aromatic hydrocarbon rings in the reaction product being in the range from 0À3 to 0À9, continuously removing the reaction product from said first reaction zone and introducing it into a second reaction zone, a transalkylator, maintaining it therein at a temperature from 140‹ to 200‹ C., continuously removing the reaction product from said second reaction zone, and recovering the alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon therefrom. A halide promoter such as HCl may be used in amount 0À5-10 moles per mole AlCl 3 . Examples describe the preparation of ethylbenzene by alkylating benzene with ethylene. |
