1450313 Repairing cable sheaths INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 7 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 10363/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division H2] A tubular insulation sheath of polyethylene is extruded around a zone of an electric telephone or power cable between spaced apart locations at which the cable is clamped, the extrusion being effected from the tubular orifice of a die which is mounted to an extruder for displacement along the zone during the extrusion. The die is axially divided to permit it to be manually assembled around the zone of the cable and, during extrusion, vacuum is applied through the die to between the sheath and cable. The sheath may be extruded during the manufacture of the cable, or in repairing damage to the insulation of part of the length of a submarine cable raised from the sea bed on to a cable laying ship. Movement of the die and the extruder along the zone is effected on a wheeled carriage Fig. 1 (not shown). The die, Fig. 3, comprises respective axially divided pairs of inner and outer shells 11, 12 which locate together, at an annular groove and projection 13, upon manual assembly by handles 19 around the cable 2 which passes, at a centering ring 20, through a bore of the die to which the vacuum is applied at an inlet 21 during extrusion. The assembled die is manually inserted, and secured, within an extruder die head 6, Fig. 2, at a recess 22 having a lateral opening 22<SP>1</SP> through which the cable is introduced prior to its clamping at the spaced apart locations. During extrusion, the insulation is delivered to diametrically opposed inlets 17 of the die, supplying an annular die groove 16, by a pair of die block passages 18 supplied from the extruder 4, via a valve 24 which, at the termination of extrusion, is operable to divert the insulation to the exterior of the block 6 at 25.
