1451676 Reverse osmosis BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 28 May 1974 [29 May 1973[ 23657/74 Heading B1X A process for subjecting at least one substance from a liquid medium comprising the substance in dissolved form and at least one solvent for the substance, comprises introducing into the liquid medium at least one macromolecular substance capable of selectively fixing the molecules of the substance to be separated, the macromolecular substance forming, before and after fixing the molecules of the substance to be separated, a homogenous liquid phase in admixture with the liquid medium; allowing at least a substantial fraction of the molecules of the substance to be separated to be fixed by the molecules of the macromolecular substance: and passing the liquid medium thus obtained through an ultrafilatration or reverse osmosis membrane capable of retaining the associations of molecules formed between the macromolecular substance and the substance to be separated whilst allowing to pass at least the molecules of the solvent. The macromolecular substance may be a synthetic vinyl or acrylic polymer, dextran, pectic acid or a soluble protein such as albumen. The process is applicable to purification of beer, coffee, milk, or fruit juice; isolation of vitamins; recovering traces of catalysts; or purifying effluents. |
