The web adheres to belts 5 by virtue of the surface tension of the water and is stretched 2-4 times its original width. In a modification certain of belts 51 may also be wetted. The web may be withdrawn over roller 9 on to one or more hot drums 10 and 101 at such a speed that no tension is exerted laterally on the spread web; the edges of said web being subject to suction on the or the first hot drum to spread the edges laterally.
