Parting off mechanism is intended for carrying out operations at pre-determined points on a long workpiece and comprising a guide track (1) for the workpiece, a machine tool unit (3) having its tool (7) at the start end of the track, and at least one stop (2) on the track. A number of stops (2) are spaced along the track, each of which can be placed in the path of the workpiece. The operating tool (7) of the machine (3) is adjustable (4, 5) over a certain distance towards and away from the first stop of the track. The tool adjustment distance is pref. equal to the spacing of the stop.
