1463383 Preparing pigmentary forms of polyhalogeno copper phthalocyanines IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Oct 1975 [11 Nov 1974] 48628/74 Heading C4P A process for the manufacture of pigmentary forms of polyhalogeno copper phthalocyanine prepared by halogenating copper phthalocyanine in an AlCl 3 /NaCl flux comprises mixing the crude halogenation product and flux with more than an equal weight of water containing 0À25-5À0% by weight of a mineral acid, adding a waterimmiscible organic liquid in an amount of from 25-500% by weight of the polyhalogeno copper phthalocyanine to form a two layer system, the polyhalogeno copper phthalocyanine being present with the organic liquid in one layer, the other layer being an aqueous layer which is separated and discarded, washing the residual layer with water, mixing an anionic surface active agent with the residual layer and at least sufficient alkali to render the residual layer alkaline, boiling the residual layer, washing the residual layer with water and thereafter isolating the polyhalogeno copper phthalocyanine. The mineral acid is preferably sulphuric acid and the water immiscible organic liquids are chlorinated hydrocarbons, e.g. mono- and di-chlorobenzenes and aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene, toluene and xylene. The washing step may be carried out by decantation and the organic liquid may be separated from the polyhalogeno copper phthalocyanine by direct distillation optionally under reduced pressure or by steam distillation. The anionic surface active agent is used in amounts from 1-10% by weight of the polyhalogeno copper phthalocyanine and a non-ionic surface active agent may be added before the distillation. |
