An additive material in wire form is fed into a molten metal flowing through a downsprue of a casting mold initially at a preselected feed rate. The instantaneous pouring rate of the molted metal is determined continuously throughout the pour and the feed rate of the wire is automatically varied in direct relation to changes in the pouring rate in the molted metal.
