Starches are recovered from dry or dried fruit, roots etc. The coarsely comminuted material is wetted with water for a short time and the non-swollen material then wet ground. The suspension is then treated with SO2 or another reductant, the pH adjusted to a value depending on the type of the material and the starch recovered from the dissolved substances by known techniques. The material can be wetted as it comes off the transporter thereby eliminating dust formation. The wetted material is then ground before any swelling can start so that swelling only takes place after grinding leading to faster and easier subsequent sepn. and recovery of the starch and by-prods. The process is suitably used in (sub)tropical climates and their starting materials (e.g. tapioca).
|
