The linear induction motor traction system has track coil lengths of a small size relative to the vehicle length. At least three track lengths are covered by the vehicle length so that a smooth switching control is obtained, with the leading coil switched on while the trailing coil switches off and with the middle coil remaining on. The sequential switching of the coils follows a smooth control signal, with the separate control signals for the adjacent coils overlapping. A smooth traction force is generated.
