Prepn. of pure 4-aminoindane comprises gas phase amination of indan-4-ol in the presence of an Al2O3/SiO2 catalyst at NH3 pressure of 25 atmos. gauge and 350-450 degrees C to form a mixt. of 4- and 5-aminoindane and indan-4-ol. This mixt. is opt. enriched with indan-4-ol to molar ratio aminoindane to indan-4-ol of 1:1. The mixt. is sublimated and the sublimate dissolved in an organic solvent immiscible with water, the soln. washed with aq. alkali to remove the indanol and pure 4-aminoindane recovered by evapn. of the organic phase followed by distn. 4-aminoindane is an intermediate for pharmaceuticals. In an example, the sublimate was the indan-4-ol salt of the 4-aminoindane isomer and consists of white needles of m. pt.
