Blow moulded plastics containers with integral support bars - e.g. petrol tanks, made by loading the mould with hot bar inserts

Blow moulded plastics containers (1) are fitted with an external bar or strut fixed by forming the container wall around part of the strut while the strut is supported as an insert on the mould tool wall. The strut profiles have undercut ribs for engaging the moulded wall. The struts may be hollow or incorporate metal stiffening and feature tapped holes or slots for anchoring the tank in position. Pref. the inserts are preheated before being loaded into the mould. The struts may be of fibre-reinforced resin. Used esp. for mfg. storage vessels, vehicle petrol tanks etc. with struts for stiffness and support. For location in a restricted space, tanks with recessed supports have a greater capacity than tanks with external supports.
