1529144 Low viscosity alkyd resin HOECHST AG 23 Aug 1977 [24 Aug 1976] 35330/77 Heading C3R An air-drying alkyd resin having a low viscosity and an acid number of not more than 15 is prepared by reacting (i) a dicarboxylic acid, (ii) a non-drying monocarboxylic acid, (iii) a drying fatty acid and (iv) an at least trihydric alcohol until the acid number is from 5 to 30 and then reacting with a monoepoxy compound to give the final resin. The examples describe preparing alkyds from (i) phthalic anhydride, (ii) benzoic acid or p-t-butylbenzoic acid, (iii) soya oil fatty acid, tall oil fatty acid, conjugated linoleic acid, wood oil or oiticica oil and (iv) pentaerythritol optionally with trimethylolpropane, followed by reaction with the glycidyl ester of a branched heptane or decane monocarboxylic acid. Coating compositions low in solvent content are prepared from the alkyd resins together with conventional additives.
|
