Appts. to advance a welding rod stepwise comprises a slide block mounted in a support, a hollow slide pieced inside the first slide and movable longitudinally, the front and rear walls of the hollow slide being apertured for the passage of rod which is coiled on a second support, the coil being located rearwardly of the slide. A guide-rod plate is fixed to the slide block base and a conduit is provided for the passage of rod to the electrode tip. A return spring to return the slide to its original position is located between the conduit and the slide. A longitudinal slot enables means to move the rod to gain access to and move the slide along the apparatus to move the rod. The mechanism to move the rod does not have rolls for the movement of the rod unlike prior art devices. Therefore unlike these devices the rod, if of a soft solder, cannot be entrapped by the rolls.
