Sterilisation process comprises contacting a surface, prod. or article contaminated by microorganisms with an effective amt. of dimethyl ether (DME) under pressure for a time sufficient to kill the microorganisms, after which the pressure is released and the DME evapd. off. The DME treatment is pref. carried out at room temp. and a pressure of 206-520 kPa. The process is esp. useful for sterilising and preserving foods and drinks, e.g., meat, vegetables, milk and fruits juices. DME is highly volatile, nontoxic, chemically inert and practically tasteless and odourless; it kills a wide range of germs and protozoa. |
