Twisted cable (2) unwound from a drum (1) is pulled by a unit (3) before entry into an extruder (4) then passes through an infra red heater (A). It then passes through a vulcanising tube (5), and along this zone (B) is water cooled. The covered cable is then passed through two sets of pulling belts (7, 8) before being coiled on a drum (9). Both sets (7, 8) have upper and lower belts forming a friction drive between them. To match the twisting (C) of the cable as it passes from one end to the other, the first set (7) is mounted so that the upper and lower belts can swing apart at different angles, about a vertical axis. Over the whole path, the cable is allowed to form a gradual loop similar to that when a cable is freely suspended between two points, one higher than the other. |
