A process for refining a metal by separating at least a portion of liquid from a solid-liquid composition formed from the metal comprises heating the metal in a crucible (30) from the non-equilibrium solidus temperature while forcing the liquid under pressure through a filter (32). In the case of dendritic alloys, dendrites in the solid are converted to a fine-grain structure. A homogeneous fine grained metal alloy workpiece can be produced free of second phases, possessing at least 80% of the theoretical maximum equilibrium solute content, and having a thickness of at least 3 mm.
