NEW MATERIAL:A dibenz [b,f]oxepin derivative of formula I: (R1 is H, halogen having an atomic number <=35, or lower alkyl group; R2 is H or lower alkyl group; R3 is H, substituted aminoalkyl, or hydroxyalkoxyalkyl group) and its salt. EXAMPLE:8-Methyl-10,11-dihydro-11-oxodibenz[b,f]oxepin-2-acetic acid. USE:Antiphlogistics and analgesics. PROCESS:A novel phenoxyphenyl acetic acid derivative of formula II is directly cyclized in the presence of a condensing agent, e.g. polyphosphoric acid or phosphoric anhydride, in the presence or absence of an inert solvent, e.g. benzene or toluene, at room temperature to 150 deg.C to give the desired compound of formula I wherein R3 is H.
