PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon fiber-reinforced Al composite material having superior wettability between carbon fiber and Al, and superior strength in the fiber axial direction and in the direction perpendicular to the fiber axis by coating carbon fiber with Al or an Al alloy at a temp. below the m.p. of the metal by an ion plating process. CONSTITUTION:An ion plating system is evacuated to below 10<-5> Torr, and Ar gas is introduced to keep Ar press. at 10<-2>-10<-3> Torr. A voltage of 0.5-1 KV is applied to plasma-etch carbon fiber for several min. Next Al or an Al alloy is evaporated, and the evaporated atoms are ionized in a glow discharge zone to coat the carbon fiber of above 200 deg.C with Al or the Al alloy at a temp. below the m.p. of the metal, pref. 400-600 deg.C. Formation of aluminum carbide is prevented on the interface between the carbon fiber and metal, resulting in no deterioration of the carbon fiber as a reinforcement. |
