The drying and cooling plant uses a circulating gas stream, the gas being compressed and cooled and then expanded and brought into contact with the material for heat exchange. Drying and cooling of the material is carried out in a cooling chamber. The expansion for drying is carried out using a valve (12), and on cooling the expansion is carried out through a device (7). On drying, a part stream of compressed gas is tapped and fed to the drier (2) for regeneration.
