The handling mechanism is for boxes etc., which have peripheral ribs to support holding pins. The pins (9) are lowered into the intervening spaces between the boxes (15) until they are below the ribs (14) on the latter. On lifting an actuating plate (6) and the guide bar (4) fixed to it, the pins are spread apart and engage under the ribs. The pins can be curved, each being mounted on the end of a cruciform lever (12) on the end of the guide bar. The latter can have a movable transverse lever, working in recesses in a guide tube so as to limit the amount of movement of the bar inside the latter.
