A method and apparatus are disclosed for ultrasonically sealing or welding sheet materials. The method comprises the steps of laying between two flaps of the sheet materials, along the desired weld line, a strip of a thermoplastics material. Then the materials are fused and bonded together by mutual penetration in the respective pores by means of ultrasonic vibration. The apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a feeding assembly (6) for feeding and inserting a strip (1) of a thermoplastics material between two flaps of sheet materials, a welding station having an ultrasonic vibration source (4) cooperating with an anvil member (5), a thermoplastics strip cutting station located downstream of the welding station and a device (23, 24, 25, 26) for advancing the sheet materials and the thermoplastics strip (1) interposed therebetween. |
