The compacting machine compacts the ground with rollers which may or may not vibrate. Ideal compacting requires the machine to pass over the surface an equal number of times. This is obtained by a predetermined program in a control system. Two sensors detecting movement of the wheels have their outputs shaped prior to correction for wheel diameter. A discriminator senses direction of rotation. A counter (6) determines length of travel and also receives signals from a memory to produce outputs for a comparator. This receives signals from a second memory for the length to be compacted. The comparator output is passed to a programmed logic circuit (15) from which an interface routes the signals to signalling channels.
