PURPOSE:The etherification of ethylene glycol with a lower alcohol is carried out in the presence of a clay mineral catalyst of kaolin at a specific temperature to give etherified ethylene glycols in high yield. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of ethylene glycol or its monoether of formula I (R is H, lower alkyl) and a lower alcohol of R'-OH (R' is lower alkyl, e.g., methyl or ethyl) is passed over a clay meneral catalyst of kaolin, preferably kaolin, at a liquid space velocity of 0.01-1.0l/l.hr at 200-300 deg.C to effect the etherification, thus forming the objective compounds of formula II and III. The molar ratio of the ethylene glycol monoether to the alcohol is 1:0.5-10. When a monoether of ethylene glycol is used as the starting material, the diether also is obtained without use of alcohol. |
